The Morobe Independent Group (MIG) was founded by Morobe Premier Utula Samana to participate in the 1987 national elections. In the lead-up to these elections the MIG established an electoral pact with the Melanesian Alliance (MA) under which the parties did not oppose each other’s candidates. The pact was based on the populist and nationalist outlooks of Samana and MA leader Father Momis. The pact collapsed after the election. In April 1989 Samana tried to broaden the MIG base by reforming it as the Melanesian United Front (MUF).
