George Jameson Johnston (1868-1949), professional soldier and military Administrator of New Guinea. Johnston served in the South African war from 1889-1902 and in the Middle East (including Gallipoli) and France during World War I. In March 1918 he was appointed Administrator of New Guinea which was occupied by Australian troops in 1914. Johnston attempted to consolidate Administration control of areas which had been contacted and encouraged settlers but he had neither the skill nor the experience to be an effective colonial administrator. His appointment was terminated early in 1920.
