Buri Kidu (1945-1994), lawyer and former Chief Justice. Kidu was born in Central District and educated in PNG and Australia. He graduated with an LL.B. from the University of Queensland and became a Barrister at Law of the Supreme Courts of Queensland and PNG. In 1971 he became a Legal Officer with the PNG Department of Law and in 1972 Crown Prosecutor. From 1974-77 Kidu was Deputy Crown Solicitor, from 1977-79 Secretary for Justice and from 1979-80 Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Department. From 1980-93 he was Chief Justice. He served for some years as Chancellor of UPNG. Kidu was knighted in 1980 and in 1991 awarded an Honorary LL.D. from the University of Papua New Guinea.
